Issuing a Practice/Demo EAS Alert From An Airplane

So I run an internet radio station, ERN/KNA, which uses a decommitioned broadcast EAS encoder/decoder unit that came from a TV station. I’m part of a group of other nerds with old broadcast hardware. We only run internet streams, none of this is connected to any sort of radio transmition equipment, and is entirely legal.

So participant Jon of ERN/JON has a joke where he tries to issue practice/demo alerts on his equipment from weirder and weirder places. First he started on an airplane, the latest thing he did was issue a DMO from an Apple Store display computer at Tyson’s Corner.

Well so I paid $10 to get access to United Airlines Wi-Fi, connected into my DASDEC from my phone and issued this alert this morning while I was on my flight to Dallas for the ACB convention. I was also able to record the station audio using my phone. Here’s the result

But it sounds very good. Also I recognized the voice it uses, the one from the last emergencey blog poast.

The DASDEC that provides alerting capabilities on ERN/KNA is remotely accessible over the internet, so I typed up a script on my phone, connected to the united Airlines Wi-Fi, went to the site, configured the alert, pasted in the text and blam! Its quite simple.
