That makes sence. But it’s still a lot of money.

Well the new ones are several thousand dollars. But, this isn’t consumer gear, this is intended for the broadcast world.

32-bit units like mine are no longer supported, they don’t get any more updates and haven’t for a couple of years. But, stations with them were getting rid of them since they have to have compliant equipment, so I got mine for $300, compared to $800 on the low end for an Intel DASDEC II, or $3,000 for a new base model DASDEC-III

But what is the difference between those? And have you noticed any problems with the lynex one?

Yeah, the DASDEC is literally just a Linux PC with some extra bits tacked on. It’s not even a good Linux PC, most of the ones you’ll find are based on a Via Eden 32-bit X86 CPU running at 1.2 or 1.6 GHz, with 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 64GB SSD. More modern ones are based on Intel 64-bit chips, but those are much more expensive

There’s actually an EPROM in the unit marked "Speech V1.0." If I had an EPROM programmer I’d dump the chip contents to extract the samples, or maybe introduce some new samples.

I got these units from eBay, and the Holly is fairly uncommon to find. A DASDEC you can typically find, but they’re a bit of a pain in the ass to get working the way you want it (to reset the password you have to connect a USB keyboard, hope they didn’t change the root password, and run a long ass Linux command. If it’s V4 firmware or higher local console access can’t happen.)
