So I made an Audacity macro that simulates the sound of a broadcast AM (mediumwave if you’re outside of the U.S) radio station. It also simulates the noise and mains hum. Attached is a demo.
In effect what this macro does is it first applies a series of low and high-pass filters. It then processes the audio through the GranComp3 VST plugin (for that broadcast radio sound), then applies filtered white noise, 60 HZ square wave and 120 HZ sine waves (for mains hum and a common harmonic.) Levels can be adjusted as needed. If you’re from an area where the mains is at 50 HZ, this hum will sound a bit wrong to you.
As for the pops in teh audio, I think the audio was a smidgen too hot when it hit the GranComp VST.
If you’d like me to send you this macro, shoot me a message. I’ve only tested it to work in the 32-bit version of Audacity, since that’s what I use. The only plugin this depends on that isn’t bundled with Audacity is GranComp3 Mono, but its freeware.
Also this plugin does support stereo audio, if given stereo input it will give you stereo output.
